Ujjayi Pranayama Technique – The term Ujjayi Pranayama has derived from the Sanskrit prefixes “Uday” and “Zi”: Ujjayi (Ajay), which means “Vijay”, “One who is victorious”. Thus Ujjayi Pranayama means “victorious breath”.
Ujjayi breath, also known as throat breath or victory breath, is an integral part of every steady or asana flow routine and the foundation of other pranayama techniques. In the practice of yoga, an asana flow is a series of continuous, smoothly executed exercises, each exercise flowing into the next, while breathing, the primary motion of the body breath extends the area from the upper chest to the navel. The contraction of the stomach is the focal point during exhalation. Read – Suryabhedi Pranayam
Breath begins by taking air from the nose and breath exits through the throat and closed mouth. Our experienced yogis point out that while practicing the technique, the student should breathe through the nose and not through the mouth. In contrast, singers can breathe through the mouth and nose while preparing a song. Depending on the environment of the venue, breathing through the mouth can cause dryness in the throat. Standing or sitting brighter can be practiced. Iyengar and Lister gave the singer friendly instructions on how to exercise.
Ujjayi Pranayama Technique
- First of all, sitting in a comfortable place, make sure that your spine is straight, now rest your palms on the knees
- Close your eyes
- Exhale completely
- Exhale slowly through the closed mouth. Try by applying force on your vocal cords to create a narrow passage for the air. The resulting sound will sound like a whisper
- As an alternative way try this also: Exhale with an open mouth and pretend to fog a mirror, then try the same gesture with a closed mouth
- Twelve rounds with whichever technique you find comfortable. Complete one cycle of Ujjayi Pranayama.

Ujjayi Pranayama Beneficial for Singer
Singers can breathe through the mouth and nose during the preparation of singing. However, coughing or sore throat can be caused by mouth breathing. They can benefit from Ujjayi as it focuses on lengthening the breath and exhalation processes and drawing attention to the stomach. Know about – Purna Dhanurasana
There should be no feeling of congestion in the lungs. They have to rest and not hold their breath. The benefit that a singer can get is to slow down a high pulse and be conscious of a quieter, more controlled breathing. Iyengar suggests that this technique is ideal for people suffering from high blood pressure and anxiety. One can conclude that there are similarities and differences between the two methods of approaching the breathing cycle, which can be used.
In a research by Yoga Skilled, researchers said that the diaphragm, thoracic and abdominal muscles become more active when the individual is performing the pranayama. Singing out many, long phrases over the period required for the performance of most music, puts a lot of demand on the breathing system. The breathing cycle includes the beginning of the breath, the duration and release of the phrase and is often repeated as the composition proceeds. Miller’s description of a single breathing cycle is similar to that of Ujjayi Pranayama Techniques and is performed without any tone, preparing the glottis for the sound. Miller suggests that one should.
Iyengar has mentioned that this style of pranayama helps bring oxygen to the lungs, removes sinus congestion, improves endurance and is highly effective for people suffering from high blood pressure and heart issues.
